The Hooping LifeThe Hooping Life: East Coast Premiere Coming to the DC Area

DC Hoop Collective and to Host East Coast Debut: 10/09/2010

“A funky film on the lives the hula hoop has changed.” - LA Weekly

“The Hooping Life asks, is there a revolution in you?” - San Francisco Chronicle

MOUNT RAINIER, MD: The Hooping Life, a documentarythat recounts the resurgence of modern-day hooping, as well as the colorful pioneers who reignited the trend, will be shown October 9, 2010 at 7pm, hosted by the DC Hoop Collective, a group of hoop activists, entrepreneurs and artists in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia (DMV) area.

The DC Hoop Collective were granted this esteemed honor and the DMV area was chosen as one of only four international cities to receive the early release of the documentary, prior to its world-wide launch. The DC Hoop Collective will celebrate this event by providing two days of hoop-dance-related activities, as well as a fundraiser for World Hoop Day.

Hooping, which holds its roots in the 1950s hula hooping craze, has reincarnated into a hipper, more edgy form called Hoop Dance. The Hooping Life follows modern roots of the current-day hooping resurgence. No longer merely a child’s pass-time, hooping has attracted millions of adults, including Director Amy Goldstein, whose hoop experience spurred the creation of this full-length feature documentary.

The film follows 12 hoopers, who at the inception of the current hooping revolution, set out to change themselves and world, with hoop in hand. The Hooping Life chronicles the lives of these pioneers, which including some of the biggest and well-known names in the hooping industry, such as HoopGirl, Hoopalicious, Karis, Baxter, Sass, Tisha Marina, Groovehoops and more!

The Hooping Life looks at the lives, histories, trials and triumphs of these hooping giants through an entertaining -- and sometimes heart wrenching—point of view. In anintimately video-blogged form, a subculture unfolds and the audience is pulled into a world where hooping is considered an art and a life-saver as well as a tool to heal bodies and minds, changed lives, create careers and tap into a new sense of spirituality.

The DC Hoop Collective will hold The Hooping Life premiere, October 9, 2010, along with a full day of hooping workshops, a silent auction and performances by local and visiting hoopers at Joe’s Movement Emporium at 3309 Bunker Hill Road, Mount Rainier, MD 20712 MD starting at 12pm.  The premier is at 7pm.

The following day, October 10, 2010, will feature a free Hoop Jam and many family-friendly activities from 12pm – 3pm at Rock Creek Park site #1 near Pierce Mill in honor of World Hoop Day, a day dedicated to bringing dance, exercise and hoops to under-privileged children living in extreme poverty and under-developed neighborhoods of our world.
In anticipation of The Hooping Life premiere and World Hoop Day, the DC Hoop Collective and Hoop Dance DC will hold Hoop Dance Flash Mob performances and hoop-making workshops in the DMV area. Proceeds from hoop sales will go toward the World Hoop Day mission. (See full schedule below)

Proceeds and donations from The Hooping Life premiere will go toward the World Hoop Day (WHD) non-profit organization. The mission of World Hoop Day is to donate hula hoops to under-served children around the world. In the past, hoops have been donated to children in Mexico, Sri Lanka, Haiti, Costa Rica and the United States.
